NEW YORK GUN LAWS & CONCEALED CARRY
New York has some of the most detailed firearm licensing requirements in the country. Anyone looking to purchase, possess, or carry a handgun should understand both New York State law and any additional rules that may apply in their local licensing jurisdiction.
NEW YORK CONCEALED CARRY LICENSES
Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2022 decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, New York may no longer require applicants to demonstrate a special need for self-defense in order to qualify for a concealed carry license. New York still maintains licensing requirements, background checks, training requirements, interviews, references, and other eligibility standards. New York State Attorney General
A valid New York pistol license is generally required to possess or carry a handgun, subject to specific exemptions under state law.
CONCEALED CARRY TRAINING
Applicants seeking a New York concealed carry license are generally required to complete the state-mandated firearms safety training course, which includes classroom instruction and live-fire training, unless they qualify for an exemption. New York State Police

OPEN CARRY IN NEW YORK
New York does not generally permit the open carry of handguns. A concealed carry license does not authorize an individual to openly carry a handgun. New York State Attorney General
NEW YORK DOES NOT HAVE GENERAL FIREARM RECIPROCITY
New York does not generally recognize concealed carry licenses or permits issued by other states. Anyone wishing to lawfully carry a handgun in New York must have the appropriate New York license or qualify for a specific exemption.
Likewise, having a New York concealed carry license does not automatically give you the right to carry in another state. Each state establishes its own firearm and reciprocity requirements.
NEW YORK CITY
New York City maintains its own handgun licensing system through the NYPD License Division. A county-issued New York State pistol license by itself does not generally authorize a person to carry a handgun within New York City. An appropriate New York City license, such as a Special Carry license where applicable, may also be required. New York City Government
WHERE YOU CAN AND CANNOT CARRY
Even with a valid concealed carry license, firearms cannot legally be carried everywhere.
New York law restricts firearm possession in numerous designated sensitive locations, and additional federal or local restrictions may also apply. These can include certain government buildings, courthouses, schools, public transportation, Times Square, and other locations identified by law. New York State Attorney General
License holders are responsible for understanding the laws that apply before carrying a firearm.
